CORFU. Toxic smoke and dioxins are spreading through the atmosphere and lying over the ground, on food and the water table.

Painful memories of the nightmare with the rubbish that Corfu lived through not so long ago.

Over at least the last ten days several roads in South Corfu have become rubbish dumps since the transfer of waste to Palero has been suspended.

Fires have broken out in the piles of rubbish and according to information received by Enimerosi, are anything but 'accidental'.

According to the Fire Department, three separate fires broke out in piles of rubbish in Perivoli, Vitalades and Kavos, spreading toxic smoke and dioxins through the atmosphere and lying over the ground, on food and the water table.

Corfu Fire Chief Nikos Kolovos told Enimerosi that the Fire Department is investigating all three fires and charge sheets are being drawn up. It should be noted that arson and polluting the environment are felonies and are subject to heavy punishment.
