CORFU. The project aims to promote cultural tourism through the valorisation of the Adriatic-Ionian Coastal Route by creating a network of historic built heritage hallmarks across the cross-border area.
Corfu Inspectorate of Antiquities is organising an Info Day on the project “Coastal Heritage Network (CoHeN)”, which is part of the Operational Programme Interreg V-A Greece-Italy 2014-2020, on Wednesday 3 November at 10:00am in the Corfu Inspectorate of Antiquities meeting room in the Old Fortress.
The CoHeN project, with a total budget of €6,420,600 under Priority Axis 2 “Integrated Environmental Management”, is due to run for 41 months (July 2019-December 2022). The Inspectorate of Antiquities of Aitoloakarnania and Lefkada is the lead partner of the project, while the Inspectorates of Antiquities of Ilia, Thesprotia, Corfu and Puglia Region are partners of the project.
The project aims to promote cultural tourism through the valorisation of the Adriatic-Ionian Coastal Route by creating a network of historic built heritage hallmarks across the cross-border area.
The project includes a series of targeted interventions in important fortresses, castles, historic towers and lighthouses along the Ionian and Adriatic Seas (17 monuments in total, 11 in Greece and 6 in Italy) which will significantly improve the current state of the selected monuments and enhance the visitor experience.
In addition, the CoHeN project aims to increase the attractiveness of the involved territories by defining a common heritage management model and to strengthen participatory processes, involving public bodies, private bodies of the cultural and tourism sector, as well as the local communities.
The Corfu Inspectorate of Antiquities participates in the programme by preparing the study “Corfu Island Fortress Network”, with a total budget of €550,000. The project aims to create a cultural route on Corfu’s fortification architecture, complementing the projects that have been implemented in the five fortresses and castles of the island included in the project.
According to the relevant press release, extensive interventions will be carried out at the Old Fortress, where restoration work is planned on three military buildings and the creation of a permanent exhibition.
All measures to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 will be strictly observed during the meeting. The event will also be live streamed on the project's Facebook page.
