CORFU. Great response from the public.

North Corfu Municipality is continuing the reuse and recycling of clothes, footwear and linen goods. On Monday 18 October 2021 a team from the Municipality, including Deputy Mayor for the Circular Economy, Environment and Public Relations Spyridoula Kokkali and the North Corfu Civil Protection Supervisor Giorgos Mavropoulos, handed over 1.5 tons of clothing for recycling, reaching a total of 10 tons and 120kg in just 6 months since the signing of the cooperation agreement between North Corfu Municipality and Social Cooperative Enterprise ‘All Together for the Corfu Environment’.

Clothes, footwear and linen goods are being collected at the Acharavi, Arillas and Horoepiskopi Green Spots, as well as the recycling bins located at the Town Hall Square in Acharavi, Sinies, Agros KEP and Kassiopi Green Spot. Those that are in good condition will be collected for reuse and will be given for free to those in need, while those that cannot be reused will be recycled.

This recycling effort is of great importance, because not only does another material become recyclable, but also our environmental impact and the huge cost of waste management are being reduced. It is also a great contribution to the society, since many of our fellow citizens have the opportunity to receive clothing, footwear and linen goods in very good condition.

The response of the public to this effort is impressive and it is worth noting that large businesses, such as hotels and restaurants, are now participating as well.

It should also be noted that the North Corfu Municipality is the first municipality of a Greek island that is recycling clothes, footwear and linen goods – an effort that is included, among many others, in the new recycling law.
