CORFU. The protest was part of a national work stoppage from 10:00 to 15:00.

Corfu Hospital employees held a protest early this afternoon to protest against mandatory vaccinations for health workers and the suspension of those who aren't vaccinated.

The protest was part of a national work stoppage from 10:00 to 15:00.

Union demands

The workers are demanding that the suspension of work and leave be lifted and that contracted workers be made permanent in order to cover the critical needs of public health and care units. They are also demanding health protection measures in workplaces, public transport and schools as well as wage increases and support for public healthcare facilities with fast-track recruitment of permanent staff.

The President of the Employees' Union Dina Ioannou said the government measure making vaccination mandatory for health workers has created a huge problem in staffing. On a local level, 64 employees are on their 21st day of suspension.

The Union is demanding the immediate return to work of all suspended employees, adherence to the health protocols, auxiliary staff to be made permanent and support for the public health system - not privatisation.

The President of the regional branch of the Public Employees' Union (ADEDY) Vaggelis Christodoulos said that the union completely supports the just demands of the hospital health workers.

He also condemns the "his unprecedented politicial persecution and removal from responsibilities by decision of the Social Welfare & Solidarity Union."
