CORFU. The grass was cut on Tuesday morning.

It appears that the Municipality is now proceeding with the necessary repair work at Kontokali Nursery School following pressure from parents and guardians.

Work started on Tuesday morning with a worker coming to cut the grass around the building.

Parents met with the Councillor responsible for education Maria Zervou on Monday evening where there was a wide-ranging discussion about the problems at the school - which mainly involve small repairs such as plumbing in the toilets, installation of air-conditioning, fence repairs, damage to the walls and removing damp and painting the walls.

At the meeting Ms. Zervou promised that municipal crews will complete most of the repairs within the next two weeks.

Nevertheless, a parent who spoke with Enimerosi wondered why the municipality hadn't taken care of the problems before the school opened and before it was necessary for parents, concerned about the health of their children, to protest.

Mayor Meropi Ydraiou told ERT Kerkyra that the electricity had been cut off and the owner of the property hadn't restored it and, consequently, work could not be carried out. She added that because the head of the nursery was transferred to another school, there was no written request for the necessary repairwork to ensure safe and healthy conditions for the young children.

However, a parent told Enimerosi, "We had brought the matter up at a previous meeting with Ms. Zervou."

Parents said that they were willing to show goodwill on the condition that work does actually go ahead. "We won't allow this situation to continue to the detriment of our children's health," they said.

Previously, the matter of moving the children to a container in Kontokali was put on hold as the majority objected, considering it to be an unacceptable solution.
