CORFU. High numbers in August – 90% hotel occupancy

August has started well for North Corfu tourism, since throughout the previous period it was at a low level in the absence of British visitors. However, it has paved the way for other markets.

According to tourism bodies and professionals, the numbers since the beginning of the month are very satisfactory, and tourism in September is expected to be equally good.

The absence of the British market throughout the previous period – for the first time ever – had a serious impact on the area, which usually works mainly with the British. However, this situation has led to a change in some areas, such as Sidari and Roda, by opening up new markets such as Romania, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Israel and France.

“In the last 15 days we have had more people in the area. We now have not only British but also Romanian, Polish and Hungarian tourists." said Mr. Yiannis Koufalis, owner of a hotel and catering business in Sidari. "The British, of course, remain in first place, but unfortunately, tourism in Sidari started late.”

According to Corfu Hoteliers' Association President Babis Voulgaris, areas that relied on British tourism, such as Sidari and Kavos, faced serious difficulties last month. “Once the British started coming, they were number one again and August is going very well for these areas,” he said.

Hotel occupancy

According to professionals, hotel occupancy is currently at 90%, although in rented accommodation the number is lower. They claim that, while there was concern and worry in July, August and September are expected to be good months.

In particular, the number of visitors in Agios Georgios, Arillas and Agios Stefanos is satisfactory, since they usually come from Central Europe (Germany, Italy, France), while the number of visitors in Roda, as well as in Acharavi, also seems positive, even though a well-known large hotel in Acharavi did not open this year.
