CORFU. Consumers are asked not to waste water as the network is in poor condition – Employees are making enormous efforts.
North Corfu Mayor Giorgos Mahimaris’ statementt:
General findings
- Valuable time was lost while waiting for the implementation of the huge dam project.
- The dam project was removed from the list of Major Projects, where it had been included since December 2014, following a decision of the SYRIZA Government in November 2017. IT NEEDS TO BE STRESSED THAT THERE WAS SELECTIVE FUNDING a few years ago with about €50m ONLY for Central and South Corfu water supply sub-projects but with ZERO FUNDING for any water supply projectS in North Corfu Municipality.
- The everyday water supply problems in the Municipality, in all communities and tourist areas, are the result of accumulated chronic mistakes concerning both technological issues and poor organization, long-term planning, weather conditions, reduction of rainfall, etc.
- Since its establishment and up to today North Corfu Municipality has been fighting to have its OWN autonomous North Corfu water supply service (new networks, maintenance of old networks, boreholes, desalination, tanks, etc.).
- The establishment of an autonomous DEYA (Public Water Company) for North Corfu Municipality is now NECESSARY, in order to improve the provision of services and solve this crucial issue in the everyday lives of North Corfu residents and the quality of life.
As things stand the condition of the water supply network is poor.
Specifically:
- Old damaged pipelines and pipes.
- Old main pumping stations – more than 100 and 64 water tanks which need replacement or enlargement due to higher consumption – in various areas of the
Municipality. They are constantly being damaged. Corrosion, leaks, breakages.
- Water losses due to leaks, illegal connections, waste and incorrect connections create failures and weaken the drainage capacity of the water supply network, which means that the network is unable to achieve its goal, which is to meet the consumption requirements, both in terms of quantity and pressure of the water supplied.
- Over-abstraction of desalination plants and boreholes.
- Excessive use, despite legislation which strictly states that water is for water supply and not for irrigation.
-DE I (Public Power Corporation) power cuts.
- Years without water metering of households and businesses in the Esperia – Agios Georgios Municipal Units.
- Water meters need to be replaced (at least 8,000 of the 14,000 need replacement).
- During the summer months, water consumption has increased due to the increased number of people because of visitors.
- Many boreholes in the Municipal Units have dried up.
Because of the above, there are problems throughout the network in all Municipal Units.
The company’s employees in the northern department are making enormous efforts 24/7.
The Municipal Authority is constantly involved in the following:
- Repair of damages in cooperation with the North Corfu DEYA office.
- The maximum possible transfer of water to tanks and an ongoing effort with the Central DEYAK office to supply water to all villages, in all communities.
- It is the obligation of all of us to take care with water in order to have a supply.
- Consumers are asked to take care and not to waste water, especially now in the summer.
