CORFU. The decision was taken unanimously by the Secondary Education Committee and the procedure for their supply is expected to begin immediately so they can be placed in classrooms from September.
Central Corfu Municipality Junior High and High Schools will be equipped for the first time with 20 defibrillators from the new school year. The decision was taken unanimously by the Secondary Education Committee and the procedure for their supply is expected to begin immediately so they can be placed in classrooms from September.
The head of the political party “Kerkyra Allagis” and member of the Secondary Education School Committee Spyros Poulis said that the defibrillators are easy to use and audio messages will guide users.
“Their placement in schools is very important because incidents have happened before. Resuscitation is a matter of minutes and it should be done within the first 3-5 minutes after the cardiac arrest, otherwise the brain bleeds and dies,” he said.
He went on to say that until the defibrillators are installed in schools, they will be placed at various central locations in the Municipality for immediate use. These locations will be decided by the School Committee, while an app from the Ionian University will guide people to them.
It should be noted that defibrillators are currently placed outside the National Bank in Annunziata Square donated by the Ambulance Service (EKAB) Workers' Union, while there is another in Pentofanaro donated by Corfu Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Poulis said that the cost of each defibrillator is on average €1,700. “The defibrillators are easy to use and audio messages will guide users on the steps they should follow. EKAB trainers will visit the schools to show how they work,” he concluded. He also noted that their existence in other locations in the Municipality will be a significant asset for Corfu and tourism.
