9 nursery schools and 16 primary schools took part in sorting at source - paper, plastic, aluminium and batteries - and managed to collect over 11,750kg recyclable materials. They also collected reward points on the municipal online platform.

This was the second year of the 'Let's Recycle' School Marathon on the Followgreen platform under the aegis of the Ionian Islands Regional Primary Education Department and with the support of the Hellenic Recovery Recycling Corporation (EEAA) and the aluminium recycling programme 'Every Can Counts'.

In her address the Mayor congratulated the pupils for their impressive results again this year, showing that, despite the difficult health situation, they aren't forgetting their ecological habits.

Ms. Ydraiou also thanked the Hellenic Recovery Recycling Corporation and the aluminium recycling programme 'Every Can Counts' for their support of the School Recycling Marathon.

The head of the 'Every Can Counts' said: "Each time we recycle an aluminium can we save 95% energy and we contribute to the reduction of GHG emissions. However, what is more significant is that children adopt the culture of recycling. Today, more than ever, we realise that each choice we make, each habit we change and each aluminium can we recycle influences our environmental impact and shapes the future of the planet."
