CORFU. The shotgun used in the double murder and suicide in Dassia had been obtained illegally.
According to the latest information from the police investigation, the shotgun used in the killings was unregistered. The three deaths over a 'minor matter' have shocked the whole of Greece.
According to all who knew him, the 67-year-old lived a quiet life by himself - his only company had been his faithful dog which died a year ago.
The tragic sequence of events began on Sunday morning when the 67-year-old man, who had made a living by doing outdoor jobs, had an argument with 60-year-old Louisa Avramidou. According to information available, she had given him the use of a ground floor bedsit belonging to her in return for gardening work.
It appears that she asked him to let her have the bedsit back so that she could rent it out. At that point in the srgument it seems that the second victim became involved - Christos Zigouris from Preveza, who had lived and worked in France for years.
After retiring, Mr. Zigouris returned to Greece and bought a flat on the first floor of the same building. Neighbours say that the two men didn't get on very well and often had arguments about small everyday matters.
After shooting the two victims, the perpetrator locked himself in his house and shortly afterwards shot himself in the heart.
At the spot where his body was found there were three notes. It appears the notes were to his family and the prosecutor.
Medical examiner Ioannis Aivatidis went to the scene of the crime and later spoke about what was found. "A shotgun was used and all the evidence indicates that the perpetrator killed himself.
The wounds on the two victims indicate that they were shot at very close range and that of the third person was at point-blank range, indicating suicide. In other words, the double homicide took place first and was followed by the suicide - all done with a shotgun.
The murder victims had head wounds and the third person had a point-blank wound in his chest. Each of the two murder victims was shot at least once and it is probable that one of them was shot twice.
The man was probably shot first and there was a big distance between the two victims - around 15 metres. Based on the evidence, my opinion is that there was definitely criminal intent in this tragedy."
