CORFU. Preparations are well underway at Corfu National Sports Centre to transform it into a large vaccination centre which will speed up the vaccination programme on the island.

Following consultations between the local authorities and the 6th Health Region, it was decided that Corfu National Sports Centre (EAKK) was the most suitable facility for a vaccination centre which could cover a large percentage of the population.

Initially, Mayor Meropi Ydraiou had announced that the Municipal Theatre would be used for the 'Mega' vaccination centre. Later, however, several important factors were taken into account, such as access to the town centre which is always problematic due to the high volume of traffic. The lack of parking spaces is also a problem even on a normal everyday basis.

It was judged that Corfu National Sports Centre was much more suitable with regard to accessibility and parking.

According to Deputy Regional Governor for Public Health Kostas Zorbas, the 'Mega' vaccination centre will open on Monday 31 May and the first appointments have already been booked.

It is planned to have 14 - 18 vaccination streams and the Ministry aims to administer 1,000 vaccinations a day over a period of 40 days.

The centre will be staffed by doctors from Corfu Medical Association who have volunteered to work there and nurses from the Epirus Region.

The goal is to complete approximately 40,000 vaccinations by 10 July. If all goes to plan, by mid-summer the island will have built up a high level of immunity against the pandemic.
