CORFU. Work is to be carried out in the districts of Achillio, Parelia and Paleokastritsa.

Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Mayor Meropi Ydraiou and the contractor signed a contract today for road repair and maintenance work in the districts of Achillio, Parelia and Paleokastritsa. The Deputy Mayor for Technical Works Nikos Kalogeros was also present. The budget is €1.7m and work will begin immediately.

Ms. Ydraiou said that these funds allow road improvements to be made in these three districts. She said that there is a lot that needs to be done and as much funding as possible is being sought in order to solve problems with the roads that have existed for years. The Mayor thanked the responsible Deputy Mayor Nikos Kalogeros and the engineers in his department who, despite their heavy workload, were able to complete the 2020 planning and can now implement it following the signing of the contract.

Deputy Mayor for Technical Works Nikos Kalogeros said that several important infrastructure projects can now be contracted out - such as roads and schools - for which tenders had been invited in 2020 but could not proceed as there wasn't a municipal engineer at the time, but one was now appointed on 12 March. He also thanked everyone for their efforts in making this possible.

The work involves maintenance and repairs of roads, support walls, cleaning ditches and cutting surrounding grass and branches along the roads, road surfacing, drains etc.

The budget is divided up between the three districts as follows:

Achillio - €600m
Parelia - €500m
Paleokastritsa - €450m

The funding comes from the Public Investment Programme and had been secured in 2018 but remained unused until March 2020. The planning and tendering proceeded following consultations with local district councils over the last year.
