CORFU. Corfu Medical Association has expressed its views on two issues that affect its members - the increase in cases and the symptoms of the nurse that are possibly linked with Guillain-Barré syndrome.
Corfu Medical Association has issued a statement in which it says that we need to trust the opinions of experts. "We shouldn't accept everyone's opinions - just some, and we should listen to the opinions of experts."
The statement also says, "The virus is present and the gap between green and red is very small. Let's not destroy everything that has been achieved over the last few months with great effort and sacrifices."
The appearance of the virus in schools
We have been observing the increase in the number of confirmed cases in Corfu over the last few days and we believe that the opening of the secondary schools has had a significant adverse effect on the island. We recommend that they be closed immediately and that pupils resume lessons by tele-education. We ask everyone to adhere to the safety measures and not to relax and we are sounding warning bells to the health authorities because of the spike in the number of cases in other parts of the country so that they can take the necessary measures to protect our island.
The nurse
With regard to the case under investigation involving the nurse at Corfu General Hospital and the problems with her lower limbs which coincided with her second vaccine shot, causing concern amongst the public about the safety of the vaccination, we would like to wish her a speedy recovery.
Regarding statements that were made in the media, which caused a lot of fear and doubt about the safety of the vaccination and led to cancellations of vaccination appointments, with Guillain-Barré Syndrome being mentioned as a possible diagnosis, linking it with the second vaccination shot, before the matter was fully examined by the doctor, we would like to give the scientific view of the Medical Association:
"The Guillain-Barré Syndrome is rare, with a frequency of 1.88 cases per 100,000 population per year in the UK and 1 per 100,000 in the USA.
In 2009 only two cases of Guillain-Barré per 1 million flu vaccinations were recorded. In no study in the world has this serious autoimmune neurological disorder been associated with the Sars-Cov2 virus and neither, of course, with the vaccine and anything in the vaccine.
It is difficult to pinpoint exactly what can cause Guillain-Barré Syndrome - it could be a simple infection, gastroentiritis, extremely rarely following a flu or rabies innoculation (2 per million in a 2009 study) - it is, by definition, an autoimmune disorder with an UNKNOWN cause just like nearly all autoimmune disorders."
Fellow citizens - the vaccination is the only weapon we have to get us safely out of this health crisis.
Corfu Medical Association calls on everyone in Corfu and elsewhere to ignore the climate of fear and doubt and trust only the experts. Everyone should be vaccinated as soon as it is possible.
