CORFU. "We demand protection for public health, our children and our families."

The Corfu Union of Parents & Guardians Associations has issued a statement regarding Covid cases in schools.

"It has begun! Junior high and high schools have been open for two weeks now and there have already been 3 confirmed cases of Covid at Liapades Junior High, Kassiopi Junior High & High School and the 1st High School in Corfu Town. It seems that the academic community's concerns regarding the opening of schools have been confirmed. With messages, meetings with those responsible and with protests, we, as a parents' association, had warned right from September how critical the situation was as well as after the 2-month lockdown.

For so many months parents, educators and pupils have asked for better protective measures for schools but the government has turned a deaf ear and insists that schools aren't centres for the spread of Covid-19. It has, however, been proved in practice how easily the virus can be transmitted in classes with 25 pupils! Responsibility can be laid squarely on the government, which has shown indifference to our health for so many months and has not allocated even 1 Euro for the safety of schools.

The Corfu Union of Parents & Guardians Associations demands:

- That free rapid tests be conducted by EODY immediately in all schools with the schools with positive Covid cases as the first priority.
- Immediate contact tracing for the cases. Until contact tracing and rapid tests have been done at the schools with positive cases these schools should remain closed.
- These schools should be completely disinfected immediately by the Municipality using funds provided for Covid.
- Additional school buses in order to avoid crowding.
- Even at this late juncture reduce the number of pupils in each class to avoid the danger of virus transmission.
- Additional cleaning personnel at all schools.

We can no longer tolerate this mockery from the government!!

We demand protection for public health, our children and our families."
