Central Corfu Municipality in sea and coastal clean-up project

CORFU. The Municipality is taking part in the European Commission 100 Intelligent Cities Challenge in the category ΄Waste Management and Circular Economy΄.

Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Mayor Meropi Ydraiou signed a cooperation agreement for sea and coastal clean-up with Corfu Port Authority and Aegean Rebreath.

The three bodies will be implementing a holistic model to raise awareness and provide education regarding the protection of the sea environment in order to achieve integrated sea waste management with recycling and reuse.

The project will focus on the following:

- Sea and coastal clean-ups at locations most in need in the Municipality.
- Collection and storage of sea waste which will then be sent for reuse and recycling.
- Programme of activities to raise awareness regarding protection of the sea environment.
- Research activities.
- Education and training for professional fishermen.
- Raising awareness in the local community regarding sea waste management.
- Development, support and exchange of best practices and expertise.

In addition to the above, an open-air sea and coastal waste collection point will be set up and maintained to assist in the integrated sea waste management programme based on the principles of the circular economy. This will also help to identify the greatest threats to the sea environment in the Municipality.



At the signing of the cooperation agreement Corfu Port Authority was represented by Managing Director Spyros Zervopoulos.

Also present were Deputy Mayor for European Programmes & Development Panayiota Tzanne and Municipal consultant Viktoras Dimoulis as the project is part of the Municipality's participation in the European Commission 100 Intelligent Cities Challenge. Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality is participating in the category ΄Waste Management and Circular Economy΄.
