Education Ministry announces nurseries and primary schools to close

Primary schools, nurseries and childcare centres will remain closed from Monday for at least two weeks.

The announcement was made today by the Minister of Education Niki Kerameos and the Minister of the Interior Takis Theodorikakos.

According to the Infectious Diseases Committee, primary schools are not superspreaders but the measure is considered necessary in order to reduce the movements of parents during the day and the gathering of people outside the schools.

The measure also applies to nurseries and childcare centres run by the municipality.

Special purpose leave will once again be available for parents.

Distance learning will take two forms:

1. Educational TV
2. Tele-education

Special purpose leave

The Ministry of Employment has issued a circular outlining how special purpose leave will be granted for parents when care centres and schools are close due to coronavirus. The circular also contains guidelines to help parents if their children are quarantined at home.
