Rapid deterioration in weather conditions from Friday night

CORFU. Heavy downpours and strong SSW winds in the Northern Ionian are expected from Friday night, 25 September - Civil Protection Service urges public to stay ale.rt

The Decentralised Peloponnese, Western Greece & Ionian Administration has issued a weather warning for tonight, Friday 25 September, forecasting heavy downpours and strong SSW winds in the Northern Ionian.

Members of the public are advised not to go out for non-essential reasons.

DOWNPOURS

If you are at home


- Secure any objects that may be taken by the wind or heavy downpour and possible cause damage or injury.
- Secure doors and windows.
- Don't hold electrical appliances or phones as lightning may pass through the cables. Disconnect the TV from the antenna and electricity supply.
- Avoid touching water pipes (kitchen, bathroom) as they are good conductors of electricity.

If you are in a car

- Park the vehicle at the side of the road away from any trees that may fall.
- Stay inside the vehicle with the hazard lights on until the downpour passes.
- Close the windows and don't touch anything metal.
- Avoid flooded roads.

If you are outdoors

- Take shelter in a building or vehicle or sit down - don't lie -on the ground immediately.
- Shelter underneath thick branches of low trees if you are in a forest.
- Never shelter under a tall tree in an open space.
- Avoid low land where there is danger of flooding.
- Don't stand next to pylons, electricity cables, telephone lines and fences.
- Don't go near metal objects (e.g. cars, bicycles, camping equipment etc.)
- Stay away from rivers, lakes and other bodies of water.
- If you are in the sea, come out immediately.
- If you are isolated in a flat area and you feel your hair standing up (which is an indication that there will be lightning), sit low on the edges of your feet with your head between your feet (to minimise the surface area of your body and contact with the ground) and throw away any metal objects you may have on you.

STRONG WINDS

Be prepared

- Avoid any activities in sea or coastal areas.
- Avoid passing by large trees, signs and, in general, areas where there are light objects (e.g. pots, broken glass etc.) which can break away and fall to the ground (e.g. under a balcony).

Guidelines from Deputy Regional Governor for Corfu Melita Andrioti

According to the warning issued by the National Meteorological Service, the weather will change from the northwest on Friday night, 25 September, spreading on Saturday to western and northern areas with heavy downpours and strong SSW winds up to Force 8.

The following areas will be affected:

1. Friday night (25/9) - Northern Ionian and Epirus

2. Saturday (26/9)
a. Ionian Islands, Epirus, western mainland and gradually western Peloponnese. There will be a weakening from the evening.
b. Moving to West Macedonia and then Thrace in the evening.
c. Probably western and northern Thessaly by the afternoon.

3. According to the latest forecasts, there will be another atmospheric disturbance on Monday 28 September with heavy rainfall and downpours mainly in western Greece.

Accordingly, the guidelines below should be followed:

1. All relevant services should take the necessary measures according to the circulars from the Civil Protection General Secretariat and plan for emergency responses.

2. The public should be informed (via the media) in order to avoid any problems and to safeguard citizens.

Advice from the Deputy Regional Governor for Corfu for members of the public:

- To plan their movements so as to avoid times when the weather will be at its worst and avoid non-essential movements.
- Secure any objects that may be taken by the wind or heavy downpour and possible cause damage or injury.
- Secure doors and windows.
- Avoid any activities in sea or coastal areas.

- Keep updated on weather conditions and the state of the road network.
- Avoid areas with torrents.
- Don't park vehicles under trees etc.
- Park vehicles at the side of the road away from any trees that may fall during a downpour. Stay inside the vehicle with the hazard lights on until the downpour passes.
- Never shelter under a tall tree in an open space.
- Ensure that the drains outside the house aren't blocked and that water is flowing properly.
- Avoid working in basement areas.
- Avoid areas where there have been landslides.
- Do not ignore the guidelines from the Civil Protection General Secretariat, the National Meteorological Service weather forecasts and recommendations from local authorities such as the Traffic Police, Coast Guard, Fire Department etc.
