CORFU. Mayor Meropi Ydraiou and Deputy Mayor Panayiota Tzanne presented the Novoville participation and engagement platform for citizens and municipalities on Monday 7 September.
Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality is adopting new technologies to support administrative work and to record and follow up on citizens' needs and requests with the Novoville digital participation and engagement platform for citizens and municipalities
Since the beginning of its term in office the local authority has made it one of its main aims to provide solutions for the everyday problems of citizens and visitors and to simplify communication between the public and the Municipality. This programme is being funded exclusively by its own resources, the Municipality said.
How the platform operates
The Novoville platform enables citizens to submit requests via mobile apps to settle issues in which the municipality is involved. Citizens and visitors are able to report in real time everyday problems which require a response from the municipality such as street lighting not working, potholes and emergency situations. Members of the public can send a message directly at no cost without needing to phone or visit.
Requests can be submitted via the free Novoville app for iOS and Android smartphones which the user can download.

The request is received by the responsible municipal service and the user receives updates on progress on his or her mobile phone until the matter is settled.
Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality can, in this way, have a complete picture of the town's issues and can thus plan better and, most important of all, be accountable to its citizens.
The municipality will also be able to communicate with residents and visitors regarding all the events taking place with announcements and updates as well as ask for their opinions on a variety of issues.

The local authority's main objective is to promote the Novoville app to all citizens so that they can choose to use this modern tool for all their contacts with the municipality on all levels.
In a recent presentation of the app to municipal personnel at the Municipal Theatre Mayor Meropi Ydraiou said:
"Our vision is for the local authority to listen and to find solutions for citizens' and visitors' everyday problems and to update them immediately in a transparent, measurable and accountable way.
Our Municipality continues to be at the forefront. New technologies will now be the means we use in our administration and services for citizens. We are taking another step in the participatory administration of our community. At the same time we have created a new direct, modern and interactive channel of communication between the municipality and citizens by which we will move forward togather.
I am optimistic that our fellow-citizens will embrace this new innovation and will help the municipality to record and solve our everyday problems in order to take a further step in improving our quality of life."

The Novoville platform offers all the necessary tools to simplify communication between the municipality and the public and to build trust through providing immediate solutions to everyday problems, assisting vulnerable groups and efficient updates, as well as secure online payments, interactivity and consultation.
With regard to emergency measures for COVID-19 the platform has had new request categories added for social services and the issuing of certificates. These requests are automatically forwarded via the Novoville app to the relevant services and members of the public immediately receive information from the municipality on their mobile phones regarding their request and new public health measures.
The aim is to make the work of the social services easier and for the public to receive seamless and secure assistance at home.
