Police statement regarding drugs and weapons discovered in Corfu Prison

CORFU. Charges have been brought against 8 prison inmates for illegal possession of drugs and weapons.

Corfu Police Chief Manthos Yiannoulis gave a statement regarding what was discovered during the sudden and unannounced police police inspection of Corfu Prison:

From late last night (5/9) until the early hours of this morning officers from Corfu Police in collaboration with the Prison Administration, the counter-terrorism squad (EKAM) and the Special Violent Crime Squad conducted an inspection of two wings (common areas and cells) at Corfu Prison.







The inspection was carried out in the presence of the Prison Governor and the Corfu Deputy Prosecutor following up on information received regarding the trafficking of drugs in the prison.

The following were found and seized:

Carefully hidden in the metal wall of a common area -
- A pistol with a 6-cartridge magazine, a knife and an improvised nylon package with narcotics - probably heroin - in rock form and 9.1g in weight.





Carefully hidden in the wall of a common area -
- A pistol with a 6-cartridge magazine, a magazine with 7 cartridges and a silencer.

In cells and other common areas -
- 3 rollups with unprocessed cannibis
- 2 mobile phones with chargers
- 4 improvised knives
- 3 hands-free headsets and a USB

In the prison yard 19 packages with 9g of unprocessed cannabis were found in a prisoner's shoe (identity unknown) as well as 2 wooden clubs.





When the inspection was completed charges were brought against 8 prison inmates for illegal possession of drugs and weapons.

Corfu Police is continuing its interrogations

These inspections are part of the ongoing collaboration between the Hellenic Police Headquarters and the General Secretariat for Anti-Crime Policy.
