CORFU. The Green Movement is taking part in the protests against the selling-off of Erimitis and the destruction of the ecosystem.
The Green Movement party responded immediately to the invitation from other parties, groups and environmental organisations on the occasion of the Prime Minister's visit to Corfu and the beginning of work on the Kassiopi Project by NCH Capital
The planned protests are as follows:
- Thursday 9 July at 19:30 in Annunziata Square: protest against the legislation on demonstrations.
- Friday 10 July at 12:00: press conference from all the other groups.
- Saturday 11 July at 11:00: protest by workers' organisations in Porta Riala (Evg. Voulgareos pedestrian precinct).
- Saturday 11 July at 17:00: demonstration at Sinies Olive Press.
The Green Movement calls on members and friends to provide a strong presence to help protect the area from the destructive plans of the central government and the individuals to whom the central authority has given the work of destruction.
The Municipality must take the same stance when the Municipal Council meets to discuss what requests and demands will be put to the Prime Minister on his visit to Corfu on Saturday 11 July.
At its meeting on 24 February, the Municipal Council decided the following regarding Erimitis with a large majority:
- Reaffirmation of the decisions of the previous Corfu Municipality and is clearly opposed to any privatisation, construction and destruction of the natural beauty in Erimitis.
- Immediate abolishment of Adonis Giorgiades legislation which punishes local authorities by taking away their responsibilities.
- Immediately calling on the government and the political parties to declare Erimitis a protected area of natural beauty and the prohibition of any building work there. The area to become an Ecological Park for free public use.
- To challenge any administrative decisions either independently or by going to court in support of the North Corfu Municipality, continuing the legal battle started by Corfu Municipality, expressing its support for the local popular movement.
- Corfu MPs and the Ionian Islands Regional Governor to take responsibility.
The Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Mayor is consequently obliged to inform the Prime Minister of the Municipality's position on the issue as described above.
The Joint President of the Green Movement Kostas Kalogranis made the following statement: "Three days of protest begin today against the selling-off and destruction of the Erimitis ecosystem in Corfu and once again the Green Movement will have a strong presence in the fight to protect the area from the destructive plans of the State. We must not allow this destruction to go ahead. The Green Movement is growing in Europe and it is an absolute necessity for the green voices to be heard in Greece."
