CORFU. Meropi Ydraiou, who had gone to the landfill, told Enimerosi: "This is a tragedy for the health of the local residents, first of all, and for the operation of the facility."
Mayor Meropi Ydraiou was at Temploni landfill, where firefighters and the Civil Protection Service were battling to put out the fire which had broken out just after 10 o'clock on Monday night.
"Fortunately, the services were well-prepared," she said. "The equipment was properly maintained and the operation was well-coordinated in its efforts to contain the fire and limit damage.
"Unfortunately, fire breaking out in waste is one of the worst things that can happen and it will still need several hours to extinguish it completely."
The Fire Department and the Civil Protection Department were out in force in the suffocating atmosphere. Also present at the scene were Deputy Regional Governor for Corfu Melita Andrioti, North Corfu Mayor Giorgos Mahimaris, former Mayor Yiannis Trepeklis, local authority officials, Municipal Councillors and local residents.
