Temploni landfill fire - local authorities looking at the probability of arson

CORFU. Large number of firefighters called out - The last shift at the landfill finished just before 22:00 and fire broke out less than half an hour later - Local residents fearful.
At 23:45 Corfu Fire Chief Nikos Kolovos said that the situation had improved and firefighters remained on alert.
He said that the fire had been contained and wouldn't spread beyond the landfill. However, it was difficult to completely extinguish it as there was a lot of inflammable material and there was great risk of flames rekindling.

According to reports, the last shift left Temploni landfill at just before 22:00 and a few minutes later the fire broke out - less than half an hour from when the last workers left.
Firefighters battled to contain the fire, which had broken out near the waste baler.
The Local Authority says it has grounds to suspect arson and Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Mayor Meropi Ydraiou went to the scene along with other local authority officials.
Local Temploni residents were anxious and fearful and the atmosphere from the burning refuse was suffocating. Along with the firefighters water tankers from the Municipal and Regional Civil Protection Departments also rushed to the scene.
