CORFU. The ΄Mantzaros΄ Philharmonic Society gave a live performance once again on the occasion of World Music Day.

During lockdown the Philharmonic Society only performed online but yesterday, on the occasion of World Music Day, the percussion band performed live in the streets of Corfu.

The first World Music Day was celebrated in Paris on 21 June 1982 and was originated by Jack Lang, Minister of Culture of France, who wanted to encourage musicians to perform in the streets.

The following year 200,000 amateur and professional musicians filled the streets of the city performing free concerts with all kinds of music in an unforgettable celebration. World Music Day then became an established event.

World Music Day was first celebrated in Athens in 1984, when the late Melina Mercouri was Minister of Culture. It was first celebrated in Corfu in 2014 on the initiative of 'Mantzaros' Philharmonic Society and its conductor Socrates Anthis and has since been celebrated every year.

Society President Ioannis Trivizas said, "This year, following the pandemic lockdown measures - which are still partially in force - we are very happy to be able to celebrate this day with a live performance of the percussion band in the central streets of the town. It is the first live event after several months of lockdown.

We are certain that it gave a lot of pleasure to the public who have been through such a difficult time. We hope that next year we will be healthy and happy and that all the bands will be celebrating World Music Day in the manner that befits it."
