Mon Repos benches thrown onto the rocks...just for ΄fun΄!

CORFU. Everything was under lockdown apart from, apparently, some people΄s wanton desire to vandalise.

In order to avoid large numbers people, outdoor public areas were closed during the lockdown and nature lovers were deprived of their walks, exercise and relaxation in the lovely greenery of the Mon Repos estate.

Others, however, were able to climb over the wall and decided to 'have some fun' by destroting the wooden benches placed there by the Municipality two years ago. When the Municipal services went there to carry out maintenance work and to paint them they found them smashed up on the rocks.

It is clear that there aren't enough Municipal security guards to look after such a large area and the security cameras placed by the Archaeological Services only cover a few specific spots.

The incident takes one's mind back to some other perpetrators a few years who vandalised and destroyed the dressing rooms at the outdoor Mon Repos theatre. or to others who every so often 'express themselves' with graffiti on public and private property, road signs and archaeological sites. The public area in which they live obviously holds less value to them than their living room.

The few benches that remained were taken away for maintenance and were then placed in the Anemomylos park. Benches will be placed once again in Mon Repos some time in the future when there is money to award a new contract. Because it is obvious that these unknown perpetrators don't care that the damage costs money, which, whoever has worked will tell you, doesn't come easily and isn't ...'fun'.
