CORFU. ELME (Secondary teachers΄ union)is demanding payment of wages due, signing of new contract, existing cleaning staff to be made permanent and recruitment of new personnel to cover school needs.

Corfu ELME - the secondary school teachers' union - is once again supporting the school cleaners and calling on support from the Corfu Private Sector Employees' Union outside Maraslion Town Hall today, Wednesday 17 June, at 11:00.

Statement from ELME:

"Corfu has recently been meeting and talking with representatives from the island's three Municipalities about the burning issue of school cleaners. The discussions showed the Government's hypocrisy regarding the measures taken to allow schools to open safely. What also became clear was the Municipalities' inability to solve the problem of school cleanliness and hygiene - something that is also the case nationwide - and their unwillingness to demand solutions from the Government.

The schools have been open again for one month and the cleaning personnel have still not been given new contracts to cover the extension and the cleaning needs of the schools!

And, of course, after a month the cleaning personnel haven't been paid on time - showing that the promises made by the Municipality both at the Council meeting and personally to the cleaners at a previous protest were, in fact, empty!

Those who think that they can play with the health of the teachers, the pupils and their families or play with the rights and lives of the workers are just fooling themselves.

We demand here and now:

The wages that are due to be paid immediately to the school cleaners and new contracts to be signed immediately.

Existing personnel to be given permanent contracts and new permanent workers recruited to cover the cleaning needs of the schools. By transferring personnel and with temporary contracts the problem is just being put off and not solved!

Personal protection equipment for all cleaning personnel."
