CORFU. Residents and visitors will now be able to enjoy modern technology in the historical town.
A Wifi4EU system was recently set up in Corfu Town - free wi-fi in other words. The programme has been implemented by the Central Corfu Municipality with European funding - it was set in motion by the previous local authority - and offers residents and visitors free internet access in town. The free hotspots that have been set up will be in operation for at least three years.
The following areas are covered: San Rocco Square, Municipal Theatre, Evg. Voulgareos pedestrian precinct, Annunziata Square, Old Town Hall Square, St. Spyridon Square (Plakada), Lemonias Square, Main Square car park, Upper Square and Karvouniari (outside Old Fortress).
The system has been going through a test run over the last ten days and hasn't been taken up by the Deputy Mayor for European Programmes & Electronic Governance Panayiota Tzanne but she told Enimerosi that it is operating properly at satisfactory speeds. It remains to be seen in practice what loads it can take. The Deputy Mayor said that they are already working on extending the network so that it can cover a wider area "so that we can become a modern European town".
All those who are in the above-mentioned areas have to do is find the Wifi4EU network on their device for a free connection. This will obviously also help tourists find information about places to visit while they are here.
And if they lose their way, they can easily find it again using the free maps.
