CORFU. There were protests on Tuesday morning outside the Town Hall from teachers, PAME union representatives and contract cleaners about hygiene and lack of school personnel.

The Corfu teachers' unions ELME and SEPE protested outside the Maraslio Town Hall on Tuesday morning along with Corfu PGA Union, PAME union representatives and school contract cleaners.

The reason for the protest was the lack of cleaning staff in Corfu schools leading to the island's schools not having the necessary standard of cleanliness and hygiene.

Initially, the Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipal Councillor responsible for Education Maria Zervou spoke with the protestors and was followed by Mayor Meropi Ydraiou, who also spoke with them.

Both Ms. Zervou and the Mayor said that the Municipality is on the side of the school cleaners. The local authority shares the view that the cleaners' positions be made permanent and taken all the necessary steps to extend their contracts and it is at the discretion of the workers to continue their duties. Ms. Ydraiou pointed out that their pay is assured down to the very last Euro. She also said that there has been misinformation from the Managers of Education and School Committees as regards conditions of labour.

According to Meropi Ydraiou, there will, in any case, be a meeting at the Old Town Hall tomorrow, Wednesday 3 June, between Ms. Zervou and representatives from the teachers' and school cleaners' unions which will put all the issues relating to their work conditions on the table.
