CORFU. Former Mayor Kostas Nikolouzos breaks his silence following the announcement of the Government΄s closure of Lefkimmi landfill.

He directly attacked the former SYRIZA Government for its policy regarding waste management, which he didn't oppose until the end and courageously accepts that he owes an apology to his fellow citizens. "I must confess that the only object of their 'inspired' policies was my political, moral and possibly physical annihilation," he said with great bitterness and added,  "It is a matter of self-respect for me to break off all relations with SYRIZA."

Kostas Nikolouzos' statement
Taking into account with a clear head the political developments both when I was Mayor and those that followed regarding Corfu's major problems, the attitude of the local representatives and especially the SYRIZA Government towards me and the burning problems we were facing, especially that of waste management, I must confess that the only object of their 'inspired' policies was my political, moral and possibly physical annihilation.

A plan that 'bled' society without producing any results and which would lead to the disappearance of SYRIZA from the island but which was in the name of the law!!

Now that the impossible has become possible and we are all glad, regardless of what the future may hold in terms of problems, I owe an apology to my fellow citizens that I didn't oppose how the problem with Lefkimmi landfill was handled until the end and followed government policy, taking on the whole burden and the outcry, accepting that it was a short-term solution as all other roads were closed.

Finally, I would like to declare publicly that it is a matter of self-respect for me to break off all relations with SYRIZA, having realised in the most painful way a prevailing principle that the Left, like Greece, 'devours its own children'.
