CORFU. After a difficult operation taking nearly 4 hours the 47-year-old man wanted by the police was pulled out of the ravine where he had been trapped.

Dimitris Aspiotis, who had been sentenced to 52 years in prison for the rape of tourists and released early in 2019 due to a change in the law, is once again accused of raping a 34-year-old woman.

The police manhunt lasted two weeks and when he was finally found by police at around 17:30 yesterday he slipped and feel down a cliff in his effort to escape.

A team of men from the Fire Service were able eventually to pull him out and, according to initial information, he had suffered some fractures. He was taken by ambulance to Corfu General Hospital, where he was examined and is being kept hospitalised under guard.
