CORFU. Hotel and catering employees protested outside OAED (Employment Office) this morning wearing masks and adhering to social distancing.
The workers are demanding:
1. All seasonal workers and those with flexible contracts to be re-employed by the dates outlined in law and according to collective contracts in each region (15 May in Chania, 20 May in Heraklion, 25 May in Rhodes, Rethymnon, Lassithi and Corfu, 10 June in the other regions).
2. That collective labour agreements become compulsory for workers in the catering sector.
Adherence to the conditions of national and local collective labour agreements for workers in the tourism catering sector without any unilateral changes to labour relations, and no negative changes to pay and insurance rights.
3. If seasonal hotels and catering establishments remain temporarily closed beyond the dates for re-employment due to a Government decision, seasonal and flexible hours workers to be included in the 800 Euro support programme until the businesses open. All insurance contributions to be covered by the State.
If businesses don't open due to their own decision, they should be obliged to cover the pay and insurance contributions for the whole period base that they would have been open based on last year.
4. For the period until the re-employment dates unemployment benefit of 600 Euros should be paid to those who worked over the last seasonal period regardless of whether they have received unemployment pay to now. The unemployed whose benefit ended before January 2020 should also be included.
The shameful measure capping unemployment benefit for seasonal workers to 400 days in 5 years must be abolished. We demand unemployment benefits without limits and conditions.
5. The measures for rent reduction, suspension of loan repayments and special tax arrangements to apply to everyone. All auctions and repossessions to cease immediately and no cutting off of electricity, water, mobile and landlines.
6. Insurance and unemployment benefits for all workers and their families to be guaranteed for 2021 regardless of whether they complete the necessary working days this year.
Prepare for a tough battle in support of our rights and our lives.
