CORFU. Despite the adversity of the coronavirus pandemic and the lockdown, ΄Mantzaros΄ Philharmonic Society found a way to bring all its friends close to one another.
Due to the lockdown, all the Philharmonic Societies have, of course, suspended all their activities. Nevertheless, the absence of the bands at Easter is a big blow for Corfiots.
By use of modern technology, the 'Mantzaros' Philharmonic Society wanted to be close to the public again. With the slogan 'We're staying at home, but we're close to one another' the band played Beethoven's 'Ode to Joy' online with 30 members from Corfu and abroad taking part!
The Society's Board agreed with this initiative from conductor Spyros Rouvas and the online performance is indeed impressive!
Spyros Rouvas says:
'We're staying at home, but we're close to one another'
'Mantzaros' Philharmonic Society, like every other educational institute in the country, remains closed and we are all at home, following the guidelines from the experts.
We may be at home but we haven't forgotten our second home - our Philharmonic Society. What else can we call it with all the hours we spend there every day for lessons, rehearsals and concerts?
With the aid of technology we can stay in contact every day and even play music. This is how this video came about - a way to make up for the band's absence.
Just like many major orchestras worldwide, we played at home and via technology we came together and were able to communicate musically.
It is not by chance that we chose the work 'Ode to Joy' from Beethoven's 9th Symphony - a work whose words and music are emotionally uplifting and give hope to all of us despite the difficulties we are going through.
In any case, the magical 'inner power' of music is well-known to us all.
