ATHENS. 100 patients hospitalised, of whom 18 in Athens, Thessaloniki and Patras are tubed.

In his daily update on Saturday 21st Professor of Infectious Diseases Sotiris Tsiodras said that there were 35 new cases of coronavirus taking the total in Greece to 530.

He said that 100 patients are hospitalised, of whom 18 in Athens, Thessaloniki and Patras are tubed. Most of the confirmed cases are in Athens and the majority of those hospitalised have other serious underlying health problems. 54% are men and 47% are over 65 years of age.

Up to now there have been 13 deaths from the coronavirus pandemic in Greece (11 men and 2 women). Prof. Tsiodras said that 12 of them had other serious health problems and the 13th was over 80. The average age was 76, with one woman was over 90.

The Head of Infectious Diseases at the National Public Health Organisation (EODY) said: "The increase in the number of cases is still in line with our estimated predictions. We expect a greater increase in the number of cases, but this will depend on our efforts and whether or not we adhere to the measures imposed by the Government.

We are faced with an enemy that doesn't take account of age and none of us are 100% safe. We say the same about flu but in this case there is no vaccine and no reliable approved treatment. Who do we want to protect? Everyone. But this is impossible with such a fast-spreading virus."

Nikos Hardalias: The hard part is still ahead of us

Deputy Civil Protection Minister Nikos Hardalias said: "The hard part is still ahead of us. The next few weeks are absolutely critical and each one of us needs to bear that in mind. We have taken measures quickly so that we don't end up like Italy. It is in the hands of each one of us to show complete responsibility."

He added: "You can be sure that when needed we will take any additional measures that are necessary. We don't want lives to be lost due to our thoughtlessness and people hospitalised when it could have been avoided."

Mr. Hardalias said that a big programme of repatriation is underway from various countries and with special emphasis on flights from the UK.
