CORFU. One of the few - it has to be said - cases in Corfu where people didn΄t seem to understand the guideline ΄Stay at Home΄ is the basketball court in Garitsa. The Municipality responded immediately and closed it.

The response from the Central Corfu & Diapontia Islands Municipality was immediate - showing the speed at which measures need to be taken to protect public health - regarding the reckless and thoughtless gatherings of people at small outdoor basketball courts in Corfu.

With the COVID-19 pandemic the order to 'Stay at Home' is pretty clear. Recent images of Corfu at night and during the day demonstrate that the vast majority of Corfiots has understood the global coronavirus crisis - they are staying at home and going out as little as possible, taking - mostly by themselves - walks in the sun and clean air and protecting both themselves and the whole community from from the spread of the virus.

One of the few - it has to be said - cases in Corfu where people didn't seem to understand the guideline 'Stay at Home' is the basketball court in Garitsa.

The Municipality quickly intervened and sealed it off! It may have taken 2 - 3 days (with ongoing posts and comments from the 'amateur reporters' on social media) before the authorities responded - in other Municipalities such as Athens (Glyfada) and elsewhere basketball hoops were removed a few days ago when it was found that a large number of youngsters were gathering at courts - but, nevertheless, the Municipality here took the right action in sealing off this 'danger spot'.

Enimerosi asked Deputy Mayors for Daily Life Issues and Technical Works, Haris Yiotis and Nikos Kalogeros, if the sealing-off of the basketball court that can be seen in the photos here will happen with all courts.

Nikos Kalogeros told us that the Municipality is working on a daily basis to carry out checks and implement the Government's instructions and this includes sealing off outdoor basketball courts (e.g. Koulines, Mantouki etc.) as well as children's playgrounds.

Hoops will be removed and tapes put up everywhere, just like in Garitsa, to deter those who think their exercise is more important than protection from coronavirus.

These actions from the Municipality are necessary to get the message across to those who haven't understood up to now that which is self-evident.
