CORFU. Members of Waste Watch Corfu met with SYRIZA MEP Kostas Arvanitis on Saturday.

"We presented our point of view as regards waste management on the island, transportation of waste to Kozani, the desperate situation in Temploni and Lefkimmi, our concerns regarding the effectiveness of the planned waste management facility and the location of the new landfill and how a zero waste policy can be implemented on the island," said Waste Watch Corfu in a statement.

"We had a fruitful talk and there was detailed discussion on the subject of the new waste management facility as well as the recent proposal from Municipal Waste Europe to transform Corfu into a model zero waste island.

Waste Watch supports the implementation of a zero waste policy - as we made clear in the seminar we organised - and urge the Municipalities to immediately organise sorting at source using the traceability and reciprocity systems. The Municipalities must examine in detail and with great care the various funding opportunities and make a choice based on both reliability and the common good - giving priority to the possibility of full funding.

Waste Watch always has its door open to those who support the aims we have always had. We are also in touch with the various organisations and bodies involved in waste management so that they can constructively contribute to solving the huge problem that plagues our island."
