CORFU. Gilford St. in Porta Remounda has always had a neighbourhood atmosphere with residents and small businesses.
Over the last few years various small businesses in the area have been rekindling that colourful and neighbourly atmosphere. In a tourist destination like Corfu most businesses are open only in the summer but in Gilford St. that is the exception - with most businesses open all year round.
This development in the area isn't just due to 'modernisation' but to an atmosphere of cooperation between the businesspeople, who point out: "Most of the shops here are open all year round leading to businesses and workers developing the culture and ties of permanent residents. Any differences that may occur between shopkeepers are resolved smoothly and with understanding."
One complaint that the local businesses do have, though, is that they would like more support from the Municipality and the Chamber of Commerce as regards cleansing, maintenance of lighting and the restoration of the small 'kantounia' (alleys), which are the only ones in the old town which haven't been paved.
This, however, hasn't discouraged residents and businesses from organising various events over the last five years. Christmas decorations, children's parties and street performers. The energy and efforts of the locals working together have helped create a bright, clean traditional neighbourhood in modern times.
This year the shops are organising another fiesta for young and old on Christmas Eve from 11:00 to 14:00 with:
- Puppets
- Fairy tales
- Face painting
- Christmas decoration workshop - with each child's name
- Sweet workshop
All this in an atmosphere with the aroma of fresh loukoumades and bread with free soft drinks for the youngsters.
Organisers:
Antonia Armeni Artistic Workshop
