CORFU. More distressing images from the South Corfu landfill have been posted on social media in this video taken by a local resident.
Half-torn waste bales still remain in Lefkimmi landfill and the pool of water that has always been there has now filled with toxic residue. The remains of a period blackened by the strong presence of police, violent incidents and social unrest.
After a year, the bales are still lying abandoned there despite the continuous appeals of the South Corfu residents and Mayor Kostas Lessis for them to be removed. The Government's announcement that waste will be taken to Kozani does not make clear what will happen to the waste bales taken to Lefkimmi from Temploni under heavy police escort in the summer of 2018.
In the South Corfu Municipal Council meeting yesterday, the main topic of which was an update on the meeting at the Ministry of the Environment, Mayor Kostas Lessis said that he had stressed at that meeting that these bales should be removed first.
