At no cost to Corfu citizens.

The immediate removal of waste from Corfu to the Kozani facility was decided at a meeting at the Ministry of the Environment which finished just after two o'clock this afternoon. The transportation of existing waste and that produced from now on will hopefully begin very shortly, possibly before the end of the year, and the aim is for the operation to continue for as short a time as possible - up to three years, when it is hoped that the new facility in Corfu will have been completed.

It is estimated that the total amount of waste that has collected at Temploni and Lefkimmi - baled or not - is approximately 15,000 tons. The decision regarding this waste is tied to the restoration of the Temploni cells and the upcoming study for the deposit area for waste bales in Lefkimmi - which will then be handed over to South Corfu Municipality.

The meeting at the Ministry was chaired by the General Secretary for Solid Waste Management Manolis Grafakos and taking part were the three Corfu MPs, the three Mayors, the Ionian Islands Regional Governor and representatives from the facilities.

It should be noted that the emergency removal of waste from Corfu for a limited period of time will be at no cost to Corfu residents.

Official announcements are expected soon.
