CORFU. Amongst the issues discussed were Brexit and the lives and security of Britons who visit or live permanently in Corfu.

The new Deputy Regional Governor for Corfu Melita Andrioti met with the British Vice-consul Charlie Pikoula today, Thursday 19 September.

The Deputy Regional Governor issued the following statement:

"During this courtesy visit we discussed the possible impact of Brexit and problems there might be especially as regards tourism.

We also talked about the lives and security of British tourists and visitors as well as the 10,000 or so British citizens who reside permanently in Corfu.

The cooperation between our two institutions, which has always been excellent, was also discussed and we expressed our hope that this will continue with the provision of coordinated high-standard services to citizens and visitors to the island.

At the meeting the need for a year-round air connection between Corfu and the UK came up - to serve the needs of British citizens who are permanent residents, visitors, students etc. and to help develop tourism on the island.

It was decided to make joint efforts to start taking the necessary steps to this end."
