CORFU. There was a large turnout at the swearing-in of the new North Corfu Town Council.

The ceremony took place in Acharavi on Saturday night with the Mayor Giorgos Mahimaris, the Municipal Council, the Community President and Councillors for North Corfu being sworn in for the 2019 - 2023 term of office.

The ceremony was conducted by Nektarios, Archbishop of Corfu, Paxos and the Diapontia Islands and the philharmonic bands from Thinalia, Karousades and Avliotes also took part.

Following the swearing-in there was a minute's silence for Spyros Trivizas, Ioannis Vlachos and Efstathios Yiannousis, former North Corfu Mayors.

Giorgos Mahimaris declared that the splitting-up of the former single Corfu Municipality was of historic significance and thanked all those who fought for this to happen, especially former Corfu MP Kostas Pavlidis "who held the flag for the division high". Amongst the many people present were the other two Mayors, present and former local authority members, Chief of Police Manthos Yiannoulis, Regional Fire Service Chief Andreas Rizos and others.

Mr. Mahimaris talked about the serious problems facing North Corfu - water, refuse and roads - and promised hard work on a daily basis. "The situation requires us to roll up our sleeves and sweat," he stressed and declared that this would be their committment to the people of North Corfu with the priority being reliability and trust.

He also gave special thanks to his friend Archbishop Nektarios for the Church's  ongoing contribution to social welfare.
