CORFU. A large turnout and high aspirations at the swearing-in of the new Mayor and Council for Central Corfu and the Diapontia Islands.
The incoming Mayor Meropi Ydraiou talked about the need for cooperation and stressed that her term of office would not just be a reflection of all the recent legislation empowering the mayor and the majority party but that she would pursue cooperation with everyone as this is what has been demanded by the voters. She reiterated what she had said before the elections regarding an overhaul of the Cleansing Services and the general model for refuse collection and waste management, the establishment of a tourism department, priority to be given to transparency in Municipal finances and collaboration between the political parties and the island's three Municipalities.
It was noticeable that the first person to start applauding at the talk of cooperation, followed by the rest of the audience, was Archbishop Nektarios. Everyone was present and in good spirit, including the former Minister Giorgos Dris, who was there to see his daughter being sworn in for the first time as Town Councillor as the head of the 'Kerkyra 180˚' party.
At the end of her speech the new Mayor made two symbolic gestures - she presented three national flags to the Diapontia Islands authorities and a gift to each of the Councillors with the Corfu emblem and the words "With Love for Corfu".
