CORFU. Corfu Waste Management Watch initiative organised a long and interesting presentation-discussion on Thursday evening.
The meeting took place at Corfu Gymnastics Association and those taking part included representatives from various organisations, associations, political parties and members of the public.
The following proposal, to be put to all relevant authorities and organisations, was approved:
"With a sense of responsibility and in the face of the consequences from the dead end which the island finds itself in due to poor waste management:
- We would like to express our concern at the planned interim and future waste management which is not in line with the spirit and objectives of the European Union guidelines.
- We support the urgent demand of the Corfu community (individuals and organisations) for the temporary removal of the waste to a legal recipient outside Corfu with the backing of the State so that there can be environmentally-safe waste management and time can be gained in order to properly plan and create a modern integrated waste management system based on scientific principles. In other words, with an inter-mucipal body and focussing on education, sorting at source as well as the establishment of a modern recycling facility and a landfill specifically for inert residue.
- We demand our right to live in a healthy environment, to have full environmental updates and to take part in the decision-making procedure as regards the environment of our island."
