CORFU. The Deputy Regional Governor for Corfu says that the frequent problems are due to age and deterioration.

Over the last few years one of the main complaints in Corfu has been the traffic lights not working. On countless occasions they are fixed and then before long out of order again - with the usual excuse being that they are waiting for some piece of equipment or device.

With regard to the recent problem with the traffic lights on the Corfu-Palaiokastritsa Road Deputy Regional Governor Nikoletta Pandi made the following statement:

"The traffic lights at the junctions on the Corfu-Palaiokastritsa Road were put up a long time ago - probably over twenty years. During this time maintenance work has been carried out by contractors following invitations for tenders.

The electrical equipment is now outdated due to technological developments and has deteriorated due to age and vehicles crashing into the lights.

Bearing in mind that to properly deal with the problem requires large amounts of money and specialist studies, over the last two years we have spent all the available funds on contracting out the work on the traffic lights on the main roads - 600,000 Euros.

In an effort to deal with the problem the Technical Works Department has requested from the contractors, both in writing and verbally, along with specialist technicians and traffic light programmers, for a detailed report on the current situation regard the electrical network and system so that a costing can be made for a complete overhaul of the system.

Until the problem is finally solved, the Office of the Deputy Regional Governor has requested the assistance of Traffic Police to ensure that traffic on the main roads moves smoothly.

The junctions have been designed so that even without traffic lights traffic can movely safely if drivers obey signs and the Highway Code as regards speed and right of way.

The Deputy Regional Governor is working daily towards providing a final solution to the problem so that both residents and the large numbers of tourist and visitors can drive safely on the roads."
