CORFU. Municipal Councillor and close colleague of Meropi Ydraiou says that the Corfu Mayor is "trying to drag us into a fruitless conflict".
Commenting on the conflict that has broken out following Kostas Nikolouzos' allegations on TV that the new Mayor asked for work on the waste management facility to stop, Nikos Kalogeros said:
"As much as some people want to sling mud at the new Mayor, who hasn't even taken up her duties yet, it's not going to stick. These are the people who had their chance and failed. The proof is that they were either voted out or didn't have the guts to even stand for election.
Meropi Ydraiou's position and the position of all of us is quite clear. The tender procedure for the waste management facility must go ahead immediately now that funding has been approved. Our party's position is that the procedure must be speeded up and we will complete the work.
From 1 September we have a mammoth task ahead of us - to improve our image and the standard of cleanliness on the island, to make recycling a way of life and to let Corfu breathe again.
To achieve this, Meropi Ydraiou and the new Municipal Council have chosen the path of cooperation. No matter how hard some people try to drag us down to the level of fruitless conflict, we shall remain on the path of cooperation.
This is our priority and the task that the public has given us."
