CORFU. Councillor Nikos Kalogeros, Meropi Ydraiou΄s colleague, unleashed an attack on her 2nd round opponent Yiannis Trepeklis.

Referring to a central claim of the former Mayor Yiannis Trepeklis, he says it is a "gross attempt to deceive the public". He provides facts and figures which, according to his statement, show that the project in question was still "up in the air".

Statement from Nikos Kalogeros:

"The public provides every local authority with the opportunity to deal with the problem of waste.

Some people, however, think that the public suffers from collective amnesia and try to prove that black is white. The 'myth' that they are trying to sell to the public is that they had the waste management facility ready but...they ran out of time. This is a gross attempt to deceive the public and some people just don't understand that their time has passed.

It is time to debunk that myth with facts and figures:

- The Inter-Ministerial decision regarding waste management facilities in Corfu and Ioannina was published in March 2013. For a year the local authority at that time did nothing whereas Ioannina completed all the preliminary procedures within 60 days.
- 20 days before the elections of 2014 the local authority at that time issued a makeshift invitation for tenders with the deadline for applications falling at the time of the elections.
- There was no completed survey - just a preliminary study with wrong data. In this study there was nothing about recycling infrastructure, Green Spots etc - not even Waste Transfer Stations.
- There was no guaranteed funding - funding is approved when the contractor has been chosen and the contract is approved by the Auditors.
- Most important of all - nothing could proceed as there was no PESDA (Regional Waste Management Plan). The previous PESDA (2006) related to the previous policy of converting waste tips to landfills and didn't include anything about Integrated Waste Management Facilities with composting, waste transfer stations and recycling.

Conclusion: The 'project' in question was completely up in the air. Just like the hot air some people are spouting to the public.

They haven't understood, however, that their time has passed. They are history and that will be made clear to them on Sunday."
