CORFU. The invitation for tender documentation for the Integrated Solid Waste Management facility was expected to be completed by Monday or Tuesday but Nikolouzos told the local TV channel that Meropi Ydraiou has told the person responsible to stop.

The person responsible for preparing the study for the tender documentation was in Corfu and according to the Mayor the President of SYDISA and the head of the Municipal Cleansing Services are aware of the newly-elected Mayor Ms Ydraiou's intervention.

"This is a sudden turn-up for the books and I have to wonder what the reason is. Mr. Bourgas, who is responsible for the study, was here and we are in the final stages of preparing the documentation for the invitation for tender and getting approval. The intervention of Ms Ydraiou concerns me greatly - she said "Don't continue the work". She didn't say it to me but to the SYDISA President and the head of the Municipal Cleansing Services. I was told today by the person involved that the work shouldn't continue."

Mr. Nikolouzos went on to express his own interpretation of why the intervention was made - which Ms Ydraiou has yet to confirm. He thinks it is possible that the idea of a public-private partnership is being reconsidered which, if true, will mean starting again from scratch.

We are waiting for a response from Ms. Ydraiou.
