CORFU. DEYAK will split in three. There will be a single inter-municipal tourist promotion body. Regular collaborative meetings.

The four newly-elected Mayors agreed to work together and they had similar views on most of the issues that were brought up at Friday afternoon's meeting. The new Mayor for Central Corfu Meropi Ydraiou had called the meeting and invited Kostas Lessis, Georgios Mahimaras and the re-elected Mayor for Paxos Spyros Vlachopoulos.

On the major issue of waste management during the interim period until there is an Integrated Waste Management facility and a new residue landfill there was initial agreement that each municipality will handle its own refuse as the law requires. Each Mayor will decide with their own team how the matter will be handled in the 2 - 3 years at least that the interim period will last.

Mayor of South Corfu Kostas Lessis told Enimerosi that there wasn't an agreement on waste management but an initial update similar to that given by Kostas Nikolouzos.

Yet again it is the issue of the rubbish that is going to test the relationship between the Mayors and the endurance of the public.

On Tuesday 18th Ms Ydraiou and Messrs Lessis, Mahimaras and Vlachopoulos will meet with SYDISA (Solid Waste Management Association) and on Thursday with Mayor Kostas Nikolouzos for an update on the situation with refuse collection, which is becoming a matter of concern in the town and around the island.

On the subject of DEYAK (Public Water Company) the Mayors decided to divide the service into three.

They agreed, however, that there should be a single body for tourist promotion. Regarding DOPAP (Municipal Organisation for Culture, Sport and the Environment) and cultural organisations, each municipality will responsible for the funding of the Philharmonic Societies and other organisations in its own area.

It was also agreed that meetings with all the Mayors should be held regularly - not just in the transitional period this summer but also after September 1 when the new local authorities will take over.
