Church of St. Spyridon

The Church of Saint Spyridon was built in the year 1589. It is a single-nave, timber-roofed basilica in the Ionian architectural style, once founded and owned by the Voulgaris family, who also possessed the Saint's relics. It features an impressive tower-like bell tower, which closely resembles that of the Church of Saint George of the Greeks in Venice (San Giorgio dei Greci). The church houses priceless relics and votive offerings. The Saint's relics are kept in a luxurious silver casket, a 19th-century work, located to the right of the sanctuary, essentially forming a chapel. Tel.: 26610 39779, 33059.

It is dedicated to the Virgin Spilaiotissa as well as to Saint Theodora the Empress, a Byzantine ruler who restored the icons after the end of the Iconoclasm. Her relics are preserved intact in a silver reliquary inside the church.

Old Fortress - New Fortress

Old Fortress:

Two large bastions rise to the right and left of the main gate, while the two great towers (the Land Tower and the Sea Tower) were built on the two peaks that gave the town its Byzantine name, Korypho — a name that eventually prevailed for the entire island, Corfu.

New Fortress:
When the Byzantine–medieval town expanded beyond the Old Fortress, it became essential to protect the new area, something the Old Fortress could no longer ensure. Thus, the Venetians began constructing the New Fortress on the hill of Saint Mark.

Gardiki Castle

Gardiki Castle is a 13th-century Byzantine fortress located on the southwestern coast of Corfu and is the only surviving medieval fortress in the southern part of the island. It was built by a ruler of the Despotate of Epirus and was one of the three castles that fortified the island before the Venetian era (1401–1797). The three castles formed a defensive triangle: Gardiki guarded the south of the island, Kassiopi Castle the northeast, and Angelokastro the northwest.
