The Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior will be in Greece from 12 to 22 June.
The ship's presence in Greece is part of the organisation's European campaign to tackle the climate crisis, to promote the use of clean energy from renewable sources and to protest against the use of fossil fuels. The vessel will be at Marina Zeas in Piraeus 12 - 13 June, Argostoli, Cephalonia 16 - 17 June, Patras 18 - 19 June and Corfu 21 - 22 June.
In its press release Greenpeace says that the ship is coming to Greece "to support the local community in its fight against the mining of hydrocarbons and to highlight the climate crisis we are facing. The public will have the opportunity to go on a guided tour of this historical vessel, to see an exhibition of photographs showing the consequences of climate change, the solutions available to protect our climate as well as to take part in various activities for young and old.
Scientists have warned that we have 11 years to halve the use of fossil fuels and prevent irreversible climate change. We find ourselves in a climate emergency. We demand climate and energy policies in line with scientific recommendations to hold global temperature at 1.5°C. We demand an end to the economy's dependence on fossil fuels by 2040, promotion of energy-saving and clean sources of energy and the cancellation of all plans for the mining of hydrocarbons in this country. We demand that all the political forces in the country recognise what is at stake and that the new parliament that is formed following the general elections votes to declare a climate emergency in the country just as other European parliaments have already done. It is our right to protect our lives and our country and together we can do it!"
