For a beach to be awarded a Blue Flag the bathing water must be 'Excellent'. No other degree of quality - not even 'Good' - is acceptable. The Award lasts for one year.

In addition to this all the remaining criteria out of a total of 33 must be met (38 for marinas and 51 for tourist boats). These criteria refer to cleanliness, organisation, information, bathers' and visitors' safety, protection of the natural resources of the beach and coastal area and environmental awareness.

All those involved in beach management, municipalities, hotels and campsites who voluntarily participate in the Programme are well aware of this.

In 2017 the Award Programme for sustainable tourist boats was implemented for the first time in Greece.
