Family doctors (GPs) and the first Corfu Local Health Unit (TOMY)

CORFU. Information about primary healthcare services for the public.
- The Local Health Unit (TOMY) is a new public service providing free primary healthcare to the public.
- These Units provide primary healthcare as part of the National Health Service and administratively are under the umbrella of the nearest Regional Health Administration via the Health Centres. Each TOMY operates as part of the local Health Centre.
- Each TOMY works operationally and scientifically in conjunction with the Health Centres and hospitals within the region.
- They also collaborate operationally and scientifically when necessary with other public health services, Psychiatric Units, Rehabilitation Centres, Social Welfare, other institutions (e.g. schools, Old People's Homes etc.) as well as private businesses and organizations.
The first Local Health Unit (TOMY) in Corfu has been operational since 23 November 2018 in the Corfu Health Centre building (formerly IKA) and comprises 2 General Practitioners, 1 pathologist, 2 administrative staff, 1 health visitor, 1 social worker and 2 nurses will be employed shortly. It is responsible for the new family doctor service.
So at the moment the 1st Corfu TOMY has 3 family doctors, each of whom can have 2,250 registered patients (aged 16 and over).
In order to cover all the population of Corfu Town it is planned to have three TOMY units with 16 family doctors in total, of which 8 (GPs or pathologists) will be for adults (aged 16 and over) there will be 4 paediatricians for those aged below 16.
In its three months of operation over 700 people have registered with the family doctor.
Services provided to the public
- Free diagnosis, treatment of common health problems, prescriptions for medicines and tests and referral to other departments by the family doctor, who acts as a health advisor.
- Teaching patients how to look after their health and regular check-ups of those with chronic illnesses.
- Preventative measures and vaccinations.
- Giving help with prevention and management of psycho-social problems.
Corfu Municipality residents are eligible to register.
